Reiki Volunteering: Learning, Practicing, and Growing Through Service

Pía Baltra – Alma Reikista

Reiki can be learned through training, consistent practice, and personal observation. For Pía Baltra, Usui Reiki Master and director of Alma Reikista, an important part of this learning also takes place when practice moves beyond the classroom and becomes a way of serving others.

As a teacher and trainer, Pía has incorporated Reiki volunteering into her school’s practical activities, with initiatives particularly focused on older adults, people experiencing social vulnerability, and animals awaiting adoption.

These experiences reflect an approach to Reiki education that brings together knowledge, practice, and personal reflection.

Volunteering as Part of Reiki Training

Usui Reiki training involves learning its principles, practicing, and observing one’s own experience. At Alma Reikista, this process includes online theoretical classes, in-person practice in contact with nature, self-Reiki exercises, and guidance throughout the learning journey.

Within this approach, volunteering offers students an opportunity to take their practice beyond the usual training environment.

Contact with different life circumstances allows students to experience service firsthand, recognizing that practice also involves commitment, empathy, and a willingness to be present for the needs of other people and living beings.

Bringing Reiki to Those Who Need It Most

One of the aims of these initiatives is to make Reiki sessions more accessible to people who have fewer opportunities to experience this type of support.

The volunteering activities organized by Alma Reikista are particularly directed toward older adults, people experiencing social vulnerability, and animals awaiting adoption.

These initiatives seek to create opportunities for connection and service while allowing students to put what they have learned during their training into practice.

Volunteering therefore takes on a meaning that extends beyond individual practice: it becomes a way of participating in and engaging with the realities of others.

Consistent Practice and the Reiki Practitioner’s Personal Growth

Throughout her journey, Pía has come to recognize the importance of consistent practice, personal observation, and integrating Reiki principles into everyday life.

From this perspective, learning does not end when a class is completed or a training level is achieved. It continues through practice, experience, and the ways in which each person incorporates what they have learned into daily life.

Volunteering can contribute to this process by offering opportunities to build confidence in practice, deepen learning, and develop a greater awareness of the meaning of service.

For those training to become Reiki practitioners, these experiences can also encourage reflection on the responsibilities that accompany learning and the importance of approaching others with respect, empathy, and sensitivity.

Reiki Beyond the Technique

For Pía Baltra, Reiki is not limited to a technique we learn. It also invites us to develop a more conscious way of relating to ourselves, to others, and to our surroundings.

This understanding is reflected in her work as a Reiki Master and teacher, as well as in her interest in integrating practical experience into the learning process.

Taking Reiki beyond the classroom means creating opportunities for practice, connection, and service. It also means recognizing that personal development grows through observation, consistency, and a willingness to keep learning.

Through volunteering, Pía seeks to give her students opportunities to deepen their training and understand Reiki through a conscious and human experience.

Learning Also Means Serving Others

Pía Baltra’s experience teaching Usui Reiki highlights the important role that practice and volunteering can play in a training process.

Bringing Reiki to older adults, people experiencing social vulnerability, and animals awaiting adoption is part of the approach she develops at Alma Reikista, combining learning, service, and social commitment.

Her approach invites us to consider Reiki not only in terms of what we learn, but also in terms of how that learning can become part of everyday life and be put at the service of others.
