Ostomy and Reiki: When the News Changes Your Life

When the News Changes Your Life…
Receiving the news that you will need surgery and may have an ostomy can bring up many emotions.

Fear, sadness, uncertainty, worry, questions about the future and, sometimes, a feeling that is difficult to explain: not knowing what your life will be like after the procedure.
It is normal for many questions to arise.
- What will the operation be like?
- How will I feel afterward?
- What will I look like?
- Will I be able to return to my normal life?
- Will I be able to go out, travel, work and relate to other people?
- Will I be able to adapt to my new body?
All these emotions are part of a process that can be difficult, but one that can also be faced with support.
And this is something I know personally.
My Experience as a Person Living with an Ostomy
I was once a person living with an ostomy myself.
I had to face several surgeries and everything that going through such a process entails emotionally.
When I received the news, the impact was overwhelming. I fell into a deep depression and was given medication to try to manage the anxiety and distress I was experiencing. However, I felt that I needed something more to help me face what I was going through.
That was when I received intensive and consistent Reiki support.
I received sessions in person and also at a distance.
The support began before the surgeries, during the preparation, and continued after I left the operating room, helping me through those particularly difficult moments of recovery.
From my experience, the consistency and frequency of the sessions were a fundamental part of my process.

Reiki provided me with a space of calm when, emotionally, it was very difficult to find that calm on my own. It helped me face each stage and gradually regain a sense of well-being and confidence.
That personal experience awakened in me the desire to learn Reiki and, later, to dedicate myself professionally to supporting other people.
Today, I work as a Reiki Master and therapist, both in person and at a distance, supporting people going through different health situations and important moments in their lives.
That is why, when we talk about Reiki and ostomy, I speak not only from the knowledge I have gained through my training.
I also speak from the experience of having been on the other side.
What Is an Ostomy?
An ostomy is a surgically created opening that connects an internal organ to the outside of the body, allowing certain substances to leave the body through this new pathway.
Depending on the organ involved, there are different types.
A colostomy involves bringing part of the colon to the surface.
An ileostomy involves bringing the ileum, the final part of the small intestine, to the surface.
A urostomy creates a pathway that allows urine to leave the body.
The opening on the skin is called a stoma.
But for the person experiencing it, an ostomy is much more than a medical definition.
It is a bodily change that may require time, learning and adaptation.
And during this process, the person needs to feel supported.

About the Author
Kanke Fierro’s journey with Reiki began during an especially difficult time in her life. After several surgeries and a complex recovery process, she discovered Reiki and personally experienced how this practice could support her during that period and contribute to a greater sense of well-being.
From that experience came a question that would mark the beginning of a new path: if Reiki had been able to support her, could she also learn it to support other people?
That was the beginning of a journey spanning more than ten years, which led her to train as a Usui Tibetan Reiki Master.
