Medicinal Plants: A History That Spans Humanity
Fernanda Gimenez

The medicinal use of plants accompanies the history of humanity.
Long before the existence of industrialized medicines, different peoples observed nature, experimented with plants, and passed knowledge about their effects from generation to generation.
Archaeological evidence points to the use of medicinal plants since very ancient periods of human history. Over the centuries, different civilizations systematized their knowledge about plants and developed their own traditional systems of care.

In China, for example, the use of medicinal plants was incorporated into Traditional Chinese Medicine. In India, Ayurveda developed an extensive tradition related to the therapeutic use of plants. In Ancient Egypt, records such as the Ebers Papyrus, dated to approximately 1550 BCE, already described numerous medicinal preparations.

In Greece and later in the Roman world, authors such as Dioscorides contributed to recording and organizing knowledge about medicinal plants. His work De Materia Medica, written in the 1st century, became one of the most important references in the history of pharmacognosy and remained influential for many centuries.
And we cannot forget the traditional knowledge of Indigenous peoples and different communities around the world, who developed a deep relationship with the flora of their territories and accumulated knowledge about hundreds of species.
For this reason, there is no single “discoverer” of phytotherapy.
It is the result of an enormous collective construction of knowledge, developed by different peoples throughout history.
